With the Wicked films breaking box office records, Universal has a hot new IP to exploit. Could the Land of Oz come to Universal Studios Bedford?

The release of Wicked: Part One in late 2024 was a cultural event — the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical shattered box office records, earning over $700 million worldwide and introducing Elphaba, Glinda, and the Land of Oz to a massive new audience. With Wicked: Part Two following in 2025, Universal suddenly finds itself with one of the hottest entertainment properties on the planet. The timing could not be better for Universal Studios Bedford, which is in the planning stages where IP selections are being finalised.
Wicked has had a modest but growing presence at Universal parks through seasonal events and character appearances, but no dedicated attraction has yet been built. This is about to change. Following the films' enormous success, Universal is reportedly fast-tracking Wicked attraction development for its parks. The musical's theatrical spectacle — gravity-defying flight, emerald city grandeur, and emotionally charged storytelling — translates naturally into theme park experiences.
The Wizard of Oz IP has theme park precedent. The Land of Oz theme park in North Carolina, though small, demonstrated the enduring appeal of Oz-themed immersive environments. More relevantly, Universal's expertise in translating theatrical properties into rides — as demonstrated by their work with Harry Potter — means they have the institutional knowledge to do Wicked justice. The challenge is creating an attraction that captures the musical's emotional resonance, not just its visual spectacle.
The most exciting possibility is a Wicked dark ride that recreates the musical's most iconic moments. Imagine a ride vehicle that travels through Shiz University, rises into the sky during 'Defying Gravity,' swoops over the Emerald City, and descends into the dramatic confrontation between Elphaba and Glinda. Advanced projection, wind effects, and a ride system that genuinely lifts and tilts could make guests feel as though they are flying alongside Elphaba on her broomstick.
A complementary Emerald City walkthrough experience could immerse guests in the world of Oz, with green-tinted architecture, character performers, and interactive elements that bring the story to life between the ride's set pieces. Themed dining — perhaps a Wizard of Oz banquet hall — and retail selling emerald-themed merchandise and Wicked branded products would complete the offering.
There is also potential for a spectacular Wicked stage show at Bedford. The musical's songs are globally beloved, and a condensed, theme park version featuring live vocals, aerial performances, and theatrical effects could become the park's premier live entertainment offering. Universal has significant experience with Broadway-quality park shows, and Wicked's material is tailor-made for this format.
Wicked has been running in London's West End since 2006 and is one of the longest-running musicals in British theatre history. The show has sold millions of tickets to UK audiences, creating an enormous existing fanbase. British theatre culture — the West End is the world's second-largest commercial theatre market after Broadway — means Wicked resonates here in a way it might not in other markets. A Wicked attraction at Bedford would tap directly into this established enthusiasm.
The IP also skews towards an audience that theme parks traditionally underserve: teenage girls and young women. By offering an experience that celebrates Wicked's themes of friendship, identity, and empowerment, Bedford could broaden its appeal beyond the traditional young-male-skewing thrill ride demographic.
Wicked at Bedford is an emerging possibility that has gained significant momentum following the films' success. While it may not have been in the original park plans, the IP's explosive commercial performance makes it a strong candidate for inclusion. The timing works in Bedford's favour — the park's opening aligns with peak Wicked cultural awareness. Expect Universal to make a decision on Wicked's Bedford presence within the next year or two.
