Universal has been awarded a patent for a ride seat that could reshape itself around a passenger, stiffen during high-force moments and then reset for the next rider. Attractions Magazine first reported the filing, which was awarded on 11 August 2026.

Even so, it offers a useful glimpse of the kind of ride hardware the company is still exploring for future attractions, where comfort, fit and restraint control can all matter.
How the seat is meant to work
The patent describes a seat pan that begins life as a soft, deformable surface. As a guest sits down, their weight helps the pan contour around parts of the body, including the legs and buttocks. Once that shape is formed, the seat can firm up and keep the contour in place. After the ride, it can soften again so the next passenger gets a new fit.
Universal also sets out a more dynamic version of the idea. Sensors could detect passenger presence, weight, pressure, body characteristics, acceleration and g-forces, while a controller adjusts stiffness as the ride changes. In the patent’s description, the seat could become firmer at the start of the ride, when speed or acceleration reaches a threshold, or as the vehicle approaches hard turns or loops. The filing points to materials including electrorheological fluid, magnetorheological fluid, shape-memory materials, piezoelectric materials, electroactive polymers and conformable metamaterials.
Support, not a replacement for restraints
Just as importantly, the patent still shows a separate restraint system. That means the adaptive seat is being presented as a way to support and stabilise the rider more effectively, not as a replacement for lap bars, shoulder restraints or other conventional safety hardware.
That is the real takeaway here. Universal has filed for an idea that could make a ride seat feel less like a fixed shell and more like equipment that adapts to the person sitting in it. But, as Attractions Magazine notes, there is no guarantee the company will actually use the technology in a future attraction.
