Europa-Park in Germany is often considered Europe's best theme park. How will Universal Bedford compare to this much-loved destination?

While Disneyland Paris dominates the attendance charts, many theme park enthusiasts argue that Europa-Park in Rust, Germany, is actually Europe's best theme park. Family-owned, passionately run, and packed with an extraordinary number of attractions, Europa-Park has won the Golden Ticket Award for Best Theme Park in Europe multiple times. Universal Studios Bedford enters a market where Europa-Park sets the standard for quality. Here is how they will compare.
Europa-Park is remarkable for several reasons. Founded by the Mack family — who also own the Mack Rides manufacturing company — the park benefits from having a ride manufacturer as its parent company. This means new attractions can be developed in-house at a fraction of the typical cost, and the park adds new rides with astonishing frequency. With over sixty rides, including thirteen roller coasters, Europa-Park offers more attractions than almost any other European park.
The park is themed around European countries, with each area representing a different nation's architecture, cuisine, and culture. The attention to detail is exceptional — the French quarter genuinely feels French, the Scandinavian section evokes Nordic charm, and the new Kroatien area showcases Croatian culture with surprising authenticity. This pan-European theming gives the park a unique identity that no other park can replicate.
Universal Bedford will not try to replicate Europa-Park's breadth of attractions. Instead, Universal's approach focuses on depth — fewer rides, but each one a headline-calibre experience with industry-leading theming, technology, and storytelling. Where Europa-Park might have three or four mid-tier coasters in a themed area, Universal will have one world-class attraction surrounded by immersive environments, shops, restaurants, and interactive elements.
The intellectual property dimension also separates the two parks. Europa-Park relies primarily on original themes and characters (with the exception of Rulantica, its water park), while Universal deploys globally recognised IPs like Harry Potter, Nintendo, and Jurassic World. Both approaches have merit — original IPs allow creative freedom, while established IPs draw built-in audiences — but Universal's brand recognition gives Bedford a significant marketing advantage.
Europa-Park's in-house Mack Rides relationship means the park has excellent launched coasters (Blue Fire, FLY), water rides, and powered coasters. However, the park's dark rides, while charming, rely on more traditional technology compared to Universal's cutting-edge screen-based and motion-platform attractions. Universal Bedford will open with dark rides that represent the very latest in themed entertainment technology, an area where Europa-Park currently lags behind.
That said, Europa-Park's Voltron Nevera Powered by Rimac, a launch coaster that opened recently, demonstrates that the park is willing to invest in world-class headline attractions. The competition from Bedford will likely push Europa-Park to accelerate its own development, benefiting visitors to both parks.
Europa-Park has invested heavily in resort infrastructure, with six themed hotels, a water park (Rulantica), and extensive dining options. The resort experience is warm, welcoming, and distinctly European. Universal Bedford will offer a different flavour of resort experience — more polished, more corporate, but also more integrated and more technologically advanced. Both approaches have their appeal, and the choice between them will come down to personal preference.
For British visitors, Bedford wins on accessibility. Europa-Park requires a flight to Basel, Strasbourg, or Frankfurt followed by a car or bus journey. Bedford will be reachable by direct train, motorway, and coach from across the UK. This ease of access will make Bedford the default choice for UK families considering a European theme park holiday, though Europa-Park will continue to attract British visitors seeking a continental experience.
Universal Bedford and Europa-Park represent two different philosophies of theme park excellence. Europa-Park is a family-run labour of love with extraordinary breadth and European charm. Universal Bedford will be a corporate masterwork with unmatched depth and technological sophistication. Europe is big enough for both, and theme park fans are the ultimate winners when world-class parks compete for their attention. The real question is not which is better — it is when you are visiting each.
