The Minions are Universal's most bankable animated characters. Here's how Gru's yellow helpers could take over a corner of Universal Studios Bedford.

Love them or tolerate them, the Minions are an unstoppable cultural force. The Despicable Me franchise has grossed over $4.6 billion at the global box office, making it one of the highest-grossing animated film series in history. Those yellow, goggle-wearing, banana-obsessed creatures are recognised by virtually every child on the planet, and their merchandise empire generates billions more annually. For Universal Studios Bedford, a Minions experience is not just likely — it is practically a commercial obligation.
Despicable Me Minion Mayhem has been a staple attraction at Universal parks since 2012, when it replaced the beloved Jimmy Neutron ride at Universal Studios Florida. The motion simulator takes guests on a madcap adventure through Gru's laboratory, culminating in a chaotic ride sequence that perfectly captures the films' anarchic energy. Versions operate at Hollywood, Orlando, and Japan.
More recently, Universal has expanded the Minions' park presence significantly. Villain-Con Minion Blast, which opened at Universal Studios Florida, is an interactive dark ride where guests compete to score points in a shooting gallery-style experience. The ride uses gesture-based technology — no physical guns — and features competitive leaderboards that encourage repeat rides. It represents Universal's most advanced interactive ride technology and has been a hit with guests of all ages.
Universal Studios Bedford could feature an entire Minion-themed area rather than a single attraction. Picture Gru's neighbourhood from the films recreated in painstaking detail — the distinctive houses, Gru's imposing residence with its underground lair, and a streetscape populated by wandering Minions. Within this setting, multiple attractions could operate.
A next-generation version of Minion Mayhem using updated ride technology is the obvious anchor. However, Bedford could also receive Villain-Con Minion Blast or a variation thereof, giving the area a two-ride lineup that serves different audience preferences. A Minion-themed flat ride — perhaps a spinning teacup-style attraction set in Gru's laboratory — could round out the ride offerings for families.
The area's retail and dining potential is enormous. A Minion merchandise store would be among the park's highest-grossing shops, and a banana-themed snack stand is so obvious it practically designs itself. Character meet-and-greets with Gru, the girls, and individual Minion characters would be perpetually popular with younger visitors.
The Despicable Me films have been massive hits in the UK, with the franchise consistently ranking among the top-grossing animated releases in British cinema. Minions transcend language barriers — their gibberish-speak is equally incomprehensible to all nationalities — making them ideal for a park that will attract visitors from across Europe. The characters' slapstick humour also aligns well with British comedic sensibilities, which have always appreciated physical comedy and cheerful chaos.
A Minions presence at Universal Bedford is virtually guaranteed. The IP is too commercially powerful to exclude, and Universal has demonstrated a clear commitment to expanding Despicable Me attractions across its parks. Whether Bedford receives a standalone Minions area or incorporates Minions attractions within a broader Illumination-themed zone, Gru's yellow army will almost certainly be present from opening day.
