Why the closure matters
Skull Island: Reign of Kong is built around a trackless expedition through Skull Island, ending with a close encounter with the giant Kong figure. That finale is the attraction’s signature physical effect, so damage to the animatronic is more than a cosmetic problem.
The ride opened in 2016, bringing Kong back to Universal Orlando after Kongfrontation closed in 2002. Attractions Magazine also notes that the attraction has changed over time, including the removal of 3D on the screens in 2024 and the return of its outdoor sequence in 2025.
