The planned Wixams railway station will transform access to Universal Studios Bedford. Here's how the new station will work and why it matters.

Wixams station is arguably the single most important piece of infrastructure supporting Universal Studios Bedford. Located on the Midland Main Line just minutes from the resort, it will provide direct rail access from London, the East Midlands, and eventually Oxford and Cambridge via East West Rail. For a theme park targeting 8.5 million annual visitors, convenient public transport isn't a luxury — it's a necessity.
Wixams station will be built on the Midland Main Line between Bedford and Flitwick stations, serving the Wixams development — a major residential community adjacent to the Universal Studios Bedford site. The station design will accommodate high passenger volumes with wide platforms, step-free access, real-time information displays, and a direct connection to the resort via a dedicated shuttle service or people mover.
Midland Main Line services will connect Wixams to London St Pancras International in approximately 45 minutes, with additional stops at Luton, Leicester, Nottingham, and Sheffield. Fast services could reduce the London journey to under 40 minutes. For visitors arriving from Europe via Eurostar at St Pancras, the connection to Universal Studios Bedford will be remarkably straightforward.
The East West Rail project, currently under construction, will eventually provide direct services from Oxford and Cambridge to Bedford and Wixams. This transforms the park's accessibility for visitors across southern England, connecting two of the country's most prosperous cities directly to the resort without requiring a car or London interchange.
Universal and local planning authorities have committed to achieving a public transport mode share significantly higher than comparable UK attractions. Wixams station is central to this ambition. By making rail the easiest and most comfortable way to reach the park, the resort can reduce car traffic on local roads, lower its carbon footprint, and offer a genuinely stress-free arrival experience.
Wixams station has been in planning for several years as part of the broader Wixams development. Universal's involvement has accelerated the business case and funding discussions. The station needs to be operational by the park's 2031 opening, and construction is expected to begin well in advance to ensure adequate testing and commissioning time.
