Wixams station is a planned station that Bedford Borough Council says could help support Universal United Kingdom Resort. Located on the Midland Main Line between Bedford and Luton, this new railway station will serve both the growing Wixams housing development and, crucially, Universal UK.
The station project
Wixams station has been in development for several years as part of the broader Wixams community plan. The station will sit on the Midland Main Line, one of the UK's key north-south rail corridors connecting London St Pancras, Luton, Bedford, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, and Sheffield. This would provide rail connections towards central London and other destinations on the Midland Main Line.
The station plans include two platforms, step-free access, a waiting room, ticket purchasing facilities and real-time information boards. The design acknowledges that Universal UK will be a major traffic generator, and capacity is being planned accordingly.
Connections to Universal UK
Bedford Borough Council says it is working with Network Rail and the Department for Transport to assess how rail can support Universal, but no final public transport link to the resort has been confirmed. Whatever form the connection takes, it will need to handle thousands of passengers per hour during peak periods while maintaining the arrival experience that Universal wants to create.
Universal parks worldwide place great emphasis on the arrival sequence — the journey from car park or transport hub to the park gates is carefully designed to build anticipation and excitement.
The London connection
For the millions of potential visitors in London and the South East, the Midland Main Line connection is transformative. A sub-one-hour train journey from London St Pancras — one of the city's best-connected stations, with links to the Eurostar, the Northern and Piccadilly Underground lines, and numerous bus routes — puts Universal UK within easy reach of London's 9 million residents and the millions of tourists who visit the capital annually.
This positions Bedford as an accessible destination for European short-break visitors, significantly expanding the resort's potential market beyond UK residents.
Other transport links
While Wixams station is the headline transport story, Universal UK will be accessible by multiple modes. The M1 motorway, one of the UK's busiest north-south routes, passes near the site and will provide car access for visitors from across the country. The resort’s published planning material highlights transport connectivity as an important consideration, including access by road.
Park-and-ride facilities at nearby locations could also intercept car traffic and reduce on-site parking demand.
The wider transport vision
Universal UK's transport strategy extends beyond getting guests to the park. The resort will need to manage the daily flow of thousands of employees, deliveries, and service vehicles alongside guest traffic. A comprehensive transport plan — incorporating staff bus services, delivery windows, cycle infrastructure, and pedestrian routes — will be essential to prevent the resort becoming a traffic bottleneck.
East West Rail is a separate project; Bedford Borough Council says Wixams is no longer on the route options consulted upon in 2021 or 2024.
Timeline
Wixams station’s delivery is being tracked by local stakeholders, but the timing of the station and the resort remains subject to separate planning and delivery processes. Rail infrastructure projects in the UK have a mixed record on schedule, but the commercial imperative of having the station operational before the resort opens provides strong motivation for all parties to deliver on time. We will continue to track the station's progress and report on any developments that affect potential visitors' travel plans.
