Alton Towers has been the UK's premier theme park for decades. How will Universal Studios Bedford stack up against Britain's reigning champion?

For over 40 years, Alton Towers has been the undisputed king of UK theme parks. With iconic coasters like Nemesis, The Smiler, and Wicker Man, plus a 500-acre estate steeped in history, it's the benchmark against which every British theme park is measured. Universal Studios Bedford is about to change that conversation entirely.
Alton Towers operates on approximately 500 acres of grounds, though the actual theme park footprint is smaller. Universal Studios Bedford's 480-acre site will be purpose-built from scratch with a reported multi-billion-pound investment — likely exceeding £5 billion. To put that in perspective, Alton Towers' parent company Merlin Entertainments spent approximately £50 million on its most expensive single attraction, The Smiler. Universal regularly invests $300–500 million on a single themed land.
This isn't a criticism of Alton Towers — it's a reflection of the different financial models. Merlin operates dozens of attractions globally and distributes investment across its portfolio. Universal concentrates massive capital into fewer, larger projects designed to compete at the highest global level.
Alton Towers excels at roller coasters, with a portfolio that includes several world-class rides. However, the park's dark ride and themed experience offering is limited compared to international standards. Universal's strength lies in combining ride technology with storytelling — creating attractions where the narrative, sets, and technology work together to deliver something a bare steel coaster cannot.
Bedford will offer both: headline coasters that satisfy thrill seekers and immersive dark rides that transport guests into beloved stories. It's a combination that Alton Towers, constrained by its heritage estate and planning restrictions, struggles to match.
Alton Towers has invested significantly in on-site accommodation, with themed hotels, a waterpark, and a spa. Universal Studios Bedford will launch with multiple hotels integrated into a full resort experience including CityWalk dining and entertainment. The scale and integration will be a step beyond what Alton Towers currently offers.
In practice, Universal Studios Bedford and Alton Towers will likely coexist and grow the overall UK theme park market rather than cannibalising each other. Universal's arrival could drive Merlin to invest more heavily in Alton Towers, raising standards across the industry. Visitors who currently travel to Orlando or Paris for theme park holidays may choose to stay in the UK, benefiting all domestic parks.
The UK theme park market is significantly underdeveloped compared to the US, Japan, and China. There's room for both a world-class Universal resort and a revitalised Alton Towers — and British theme park fans will be the winners.
