Universal has confirmed that its Bedford project will be called Universal United Kingdom Resort, with construction due to begin soon, according to, which first reported the update. For Bedfordshire, that matters because it signals the project is moving into the delivery stage, with Universal and ministers still working towards an opening in 2031.
In Universal's announcement, the company said the resort will be built in Bedford, about 45 minutes outside London. Universal described it as its first theme park in Europe and its first major destination in the UK and Europe, putting the resort firmly into the company’s wider expansion plans rather than treating it as a standalone local project.
What Universal has confirmed
The development is planned as a full resort, not just a gate and a rides package. Universal says it will include a world-class theme park with several immersive lands, a 500-room hotel, and a retail, dining and entertainment complex. The company also identifies the Bedford site as 540 acres, which underlines the scale of the scheme.
The update comes after more than two years of due diligence and engagement on the UK site. Universal says enabling works are already in progress, while the government says planning permission was granted in December 2025 and that transport upgrades on the A421 and at Wixams station are part of the wider package. That infrastructure work is important for a resort that will depend on visitors, staff and supply chains getting in and out efficiently.
Why it matters for Bedford
Ministers say the broader deal linked to the resort will support nearly 20,000 construction jobs and a further 8,000 jobs when the resort opens in 2031. They also say the project is expected to create 28,000 jobs across construction and operation and generate nearly £50 billion of economic benefit for the UK. Those figures explain why the scheme is being framed as a major regional investment, not just a new leisure park.
Universal says around 80% of employees at the theme park and resort are expected to come from Bedfordshire and the surrounding regions, and that more than 100 people in the UK are already working on the project. It also says it has received expressions of interest from more than 33,000 people, pointing to a labour market impact that is already being felt before the first major construction phase has fully ramped up.

The next milestone is straightforward: construction. Universal says it will begin soon, and the company and ministers are still pointing to 2031 as the opening year. For Bedford, that means the resort has moved beyond the announcement stage and is now into the practical business of becoming a physical part of the landscape.
