More than 500 firms turn out in Bedford

More than 500 businesses took part in the latest Working with Universal event in Bedford, a strong sign of the interest the project is attracting from firms across the area. Bedford Today first reported the turnout, which matters because these sessions are designed to connect local companies with the procurement and supplier opportunities that could come with Universal United Kingdom Resort.

Why the business outreach matters

Universal’s project site says it will continue to host Working with Universal events as the resort advances, alongside a dedicated suppliers form for companies that want to stay in touch with future opportunities. The company also says it is committed to working with local residents, businesses and stakeholders throughout delivery of the project.

That makes the Bedford turnout relevant beyond the room itself. The resort is being developed as the first Universal-branded theme park and resort destination in the UK and Europe, and Universal says it is expected to have a major economic impact on Bedford and the wider region.

The wider resort picture

Universal says the project will include a theme park with several themed lands, a 500-room hotel, and retail, dining and entertainment space. The company says the development is expected to generate nearly £50 billion of economic benefit, create 20,000 jobs during construction and a further 8,000 jobs once operational. It also says around 80% of employees are expected to come from Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas when the resort opens.

Universal also links the project to transport and infrastructure improvements, including an expanded Wixams railway station, direct slip roads from the A421 and other local road upgrades. Those works are part of why business engagement has become such a visible part of the project’s rollout: local firms will need time to prepare if they want to compete for future work.

What happens next

Universal says it will continue to share updates as the resort takes shape and to use its engagement events to explain how vendor opportunities may develop. What remains unclear is how many of the businesses at the latest Bedford session will go on to bid for work, or when the next Working with Universal event will be held.
