Super Nintendo World is Universal's most innovative themed land. Here's why Bedford could receive the most ambitious version yet, potentially including Zelda.

Super Nintendo World has redefined what a themed land can be. Since opening at Universal Studios Japan in 2021, it has proven that a theme park area can function as a giant, interactive video game — one where guests physically punch blocks, collect coins, and battle bosses using wearable technology. With versions now open or under construction in Hollywood, Orlando, and beyond, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Bedford is widely considered a certainty. The real question is how far Universal will push the concept for its European debut.
The original Super Nintendo World in Osaka set an extraordinary standard. Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge, the land's flagship attraction, uses augmented reality headsets mounted on Mario caps to overlay digital characters and items onto physical sets. Guests steer through a course that blends real scenery with projected elements, collecting coins and throwing shells at competitors. Yoshi's Adventure, a gentler omnimover ride, offers a scenic tour of the Mushroom Kingdom for younger visitors.
Epic Universe's version in Orlando expands significantly with the addition of Donkey Kong Country, featuring Mine Cart Madness — a roller coaster that recreates the momentum and rhythm of the classic Donkey Kong Country games. The land also doubles the interactive gameplay area, adding new challenges, characters, and secrets to discover. Each iteration has refined the Power-Up Band technology, improving responsiveness and adding new gameplay mechanics.
Bedford's Super Nintendo World could be the most ambitious yet. Building from scratch on a greenfield site means Universal is not constrained by existing infrastructure, allowing them to design the optimal layout for guest flow, sightline management, and attraction placement. The land could launch with Mario Kart, Yoshi's Adventure, and Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness from day one — something no other park has achieved at opening.
Perhaps most excitingly, Bedford could be the first park to incorporate a Legend of Zelda area within or adjacent to Super Nintendo World. Zelda has been conspicuously absent from Nintendo's theme park presence to date, but Universal has reportedly been developing Zelda attraction concepts for several years. A Zelda dark ride or coaster, themed to Hyrule Castle and featuring Link's adventures, would be a system-seller for the entire park.
The interactive technology would also likely see its most advanced implementation at Bedford. With several years of operational data from Japan and Hollywood, Universal can optimise the Power-Up Band experience, potentially introducing new features like competitive multiplayer challenges, seasonal events, and integration with Nintendo Switch Online accounts. Imagine checking your park gameplay stats on your Switch when you get home.
Nintendo's popularity in Britain is enormous. The UK is one of Nintendo's largest European markets, and characters like Mario, Link, and Pikachu enjoy recognition rates comparable to Mickey Mouse. The interactive, game-like nature of Super Nintendo World also appeals to the UK's strong gaming culture — Britain has one of the largest video game markets in the world, and the crossover between gamers and theme park enthusiasts is substantial.
The land's family-friendly nature is also crucial for Bedford's appeal. Super Nintendo World offers genuine thrills for older children and adults whilst remaining accessible and enchanting for young children. This broad demographic range is essential for a UK park that needs to attract families from across Britain and Europe.
Super Nintendo World at Bedford is as close to confirmed as any unannounced land can be. Universal has committed to including it at every new resort, and the commercial case is overwhelming. The main speculation centres on scope — specifically, whether a Zelda component will be included from day one or added as a future expansion. Either way, expect Mario, Luigi, and friends to play a starring role when Universal Studios Bedford opens its gates.
