Jurassic World is a pillar of every Universal resort. Here's what a Bedfordshire dinosaur land could include — from river rides to VelociCoaster-style thrills.
Jurassic Park and Jurassic World have been Universal theme park staples since the original Jurassic Park River Adventure opened in 1996. Every Universal resort features a dinosaur-themed area, and Universal Studios Bedford will almost certainly continue that tradition with a state-of-the-art Jurassic World land.
The original Jurassic Park River Adventure was groundbreaking for its time — an 85-foot water flume drop surrounded by life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. Universal Studios Japan and Beijing both feature enhanced versions with improved animatronics and updated theming. VelociCoaster, which opened at Islands of Adventure in 2021, redefined what a dinosaur-themed attraction could be — a 4,700-foot Intamin launch coaster that weaves through raptor paddocks at 70 mph.
A Bedford Jurassic World land would likely anchor around two or three major attractions. A next-generation water ride building on the River Adventure concept is almost certain — this is a franchise signature. A headline coaster in the VelociCoaster mould would provide the thrill factor. A family dark ride featuring gentle dinosaur encounters would round out the lineup for younger visitors.
Universal's dinosaur animatronics have improved dramatically. The latest figures feature fluid-driven actuators for lifelike breathing movements, skin textures that hold up under close inspection, and AI-driven behavioural patterns that make each encounter feel spontaneous. Bedford's dinosaurs will be the most realistic yet built.
Jurassic World lands typically feature themed dining — think tropical-themed restaurants serving ribs and burgers in a research station setting. The Jurassic World Discovery Centre, with its DNA extraction exhibits and raptor encounter experiences, adds an educational and interactive layer that resonates particularly well with families.
One consideration unique to Bedford is the UK climate. A major water ride needs to work in British weather, which likely means enclosed sections, heated water, or a semi-indoor design that operates comfortably in all seasons. Universal has experience with climate adaptation — Japan's park operates through humid summers and cold winters — and Bedford's Jurassic World will be engineered accordingly.
