Consultation opens on Bedfordshire's next risk plan

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has opened a public consultation on the five-year plan that will guide its emergency response work from 2027 to 2032, and Bedford Today first reported that the Universal United Kingdom Resort is now among the risks being planned for. That matters for Universal UK because the resort is due to open in 2031, so the plan covers the years when construction and early operation will overlap with the fire service's wider planning.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service says community risk management planning is how it identifies and assesses foreseeable fire and rescue risks, then directs resources to the right place at the right time. Its wider response strategy says the service aims to provide a prompt and effective emergency response when incidents happen, while the current consultation is asking people who live, work and study in the county to help shape how it prevents fires, protects communities and responds to emergencies.

Universal UK sits alongside other growth pressures

Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson said Bedfordshire will face huge change over the coming years, and he pointed to the expansion of London Luton Airport, East West Rail, the Universal United Kingdom Resort and proposals for new settlements as part of the changing picture. He also said climate change, an ageing population and rising demand for emergency services mean the service must keep adapting.

The service says it has carried out the most detailed assessment of community risk in its history to inform the draft plan. Four priorities will guide that work over the next five years: prevention, preparedness and community resilience; understanding risk and aligning resources; building a high-performing and inclusive culture; and creating a flexible, future-ready service.

What happens next

The consultation runs until 15 January, and residents can submit an anonymous survey as part of the process. What changes, if any, will be made before the final plan is adopted has not yet been confirmed.
