Universal's acquisition of DreamWorks Animation and its long-standing partnership with Illumination gives the company an extraordinary roster of family-friendly IP to deploy at Bedford. From Minions and Shrek to How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, these beloved animated franchises will form a crucial part of the park's appeal to younger visitors and families.
Minions and Illumination
Minion Mayhem, a 3D motion simulator ride, operates at multiple Universal parks. Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast, which opened at Universal Studios Florida in 2023, is an interactive dark ride shooter . Bedford could feature either or both concepts, plus a Minion-themed land with character meet-and-greets, dining, and retail.
Shrek and the DreamWorks catalogue
Shrek 4-D was a staple Universal attraction for nearly two decades. While it's been retired, Shrek's enduring popularity makes the franchise ripe for a modern attraction. A trackless dark ride through the Kingdom of Far Far Away, or an interactive adventure ride, could bring the ogre back in spectacular fashion.
How to Train Your Dragon
Epic Universe will debut an entire How to Train Your Dragon themed land, featuring a major roller coaster and immersive Berk village. This land's success will determine whether it's replicated at Bedford. Given the franchise's enormous global popularity and family-friendly appeal, it's a strong candidate for inclusion.
Kung Fu Panda, Trolls, and beyond
DreamWorks' catalogue extends far beyond these headline franchises. Kung Fu Panda attractions already operate at Universal Beijing Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood. Trolls, The Bad Guys, Puss in Boots, and Madagascar all have theme park potential. Bedford could feature a DreamWorks-themed area that rotates attractions and experiences as new films release, keeping the park perpetually fresh.
Family-friendly balance
These animated IPs serve a critical role: making Universal United Kingdom Resort a park that works for the whole family. While headline coasters and immersive dark rides target teenagers and adults, DreamWorks and Illumination attractions ensure that children under 10 have a packed itinerary of rides and experiences designed specifically for them. This balance is what separates a great theme park from merely a good one.
