Universal Studios Bedford will need a world-class ride lineup to compete with Europe's established theme parks. While no official ride announcements have been made, Universal's recent investments at Epic Universe, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Beijing give us a strong indication of the types of attractions that could anchor the UK park.
Universal has dramatically raised its coaster game in recent years. VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure is widely regarded as one of the best roller coasters ever built — a 4,700-foot Intamin launch coaster reaching 70 mph with four inversions and breathtaking near-miss moments. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure combines a family-friendly coaster with dark ride storytelling. The upcoming Starfall Racers at Epic Universe promises duelling launch coasters with record-breaking stats.
Bedford could reasonably expect at least two major coasters at opening: one headline thrill coaster in the VelociCoaster mould, and one family-friendly coaster similar to Flight of the Hippogriff or the Minion-themed coaster at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Where Universal truly separates itself from competitors is dark ride technology. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, which debuted in 1999, pioneered the combination of physical sets, 3D projection, and motion-base vehicles. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey pushed the concept further with a robotic arm ride system. Hagrid's and the upcoming Ministry of Magic ride blend coaster track with dark ride storytelling in ways that didn't exist a decade ago.
Expect Bedford to feature at least three major dark rides using a mix of trackless vehicles, screen-based 3D sequences, and practical effects. Universal's partnership with Nintendo, DreamWorks, and its own Illumination brand provides a deep well of intellectual properties to draw from.
Based on Universal's current portfolio and trending franchises, Bedford could feature attractions themed around Harry Potter (almost certain), Jurassic World (highly likely), Super Nintendo World (confirmed for international expansion), and potentially newer IPs such as How to Train Your Dragon or Wicked.
Every Universal park includes water-based attractions. Jurassic Park River Adventure and its successors combine gentle floating with dramatic drops. Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges delivers family rafting. Bedford's British climate might limit outdoor water rides to warmer months, but enclosed flume rides and splash attractions could operate year-round.
Family flat rides, spinner rides, play areas, and interactive experiences round out the typical Universal lineup. Expect a comprehensive offering that caters to toddlers, teens, and adults equally.
Universal parks also excel at show-based attractions. The Bourne Stuntacular features live performers and a massive LED screen for seamless live-to-film transitions. Universal's Horror Make-Up Show blends comedy with practical effects. WaterWorld remains one of the most spectacular stunt shows in any theme park globally.
Bedford will almost certainly include at least two major show venues, offering air-conditioned entertainment that provides a break from rides and works well in all weather conditions — a crucial consideration for a UK park.
While we await official announcements, Universal's track record suggests Bedford will open with 15 to 20 major attractions spanning thrill coasters, dark rides, water rides, family rides, and shows. The company has never opened a park that felt underdeveloped, and the UK's competitive theme park market will demand nothing less than a world-class lineup from day one.
